Tackling Tables emphasises understanding number relationships rather than seeing times tables as lists to be learned. This is important as it helps with commutativity. So, if pupils know 9 x 2 = 18, they also know 2 x 9 = 18.
This approach to learning times tables means students see the connection with division – often referred to as the inverse. So, using the above example, 18 ÷ 2 = 9 and 18 ÷ 9 = 2.
